How to Apply

Online Application Materials (Part I):

To apply to the Physics and Biology in Medicine PhD, please follow these steps in the Online Application.

  1. Under "Plan for Graduate Study", please select "Bioscience PHD – Physics & Biology in Medicine" as your major and select "Fall" as the application term.
  2. On the Bioscience – Physics & Biology in Medicine screen,
    1. Rank your interest in the research areas listed with "1" being your first choice.
    2. Select 5 faculty with whom you share research interests. (1 = greatest interest)
  3. CV / Resume
  4. Statement of Purpose
    1. Please note that we do not need a Personal History Statement if this is part of the application. We only need your Statement of Purpose in lieu of this.
  5. Three Letters of Recommendation.
  6. Fellowship Application, if applicable

Thank you for your interest in applying to a graduate program at UCLA for 2018-19. UCLA is transitioning to a new admissions system. Although we are trying to minimize disruptions to applicants and recommenders, we strongly suggest that you prepare your application documents offline, including the statement of purpose and any writing samples or attachments. When you begin working online, please remember to save your work often. If technical issues arise, you may be asked to resubmit part of your application.

Application Materials (Part II):

  1. Two copies of Official Transcripts.
  2. Test Scores :
    • GRE General required
      • Must be taken within 3-4 years prior to application
      • Institution Code/Department Code is 4837 / 0222
      • Please send a copy of your original test score to us as soon as you receive it.
      • Subject Score optional
    • TOEFL or IELTS Scores
      • Applicable to foreign students
      • Must be taken within 3-4 years prior to application.
      • Institution Code/Department Code : 4837 / 36
